This new edition of Ševčík’s Forty Variations for the Viola, transcribed by Allyson Dawkins, presents all the variations at exactly one perfect fifth lower than the violin, thereby preserving the bowing exercises as they were originally written for violin. There is no treble clef, and includes explanations of some fingering options by the author. The volume includes an interesting biography of Otakar Ševčík, elucidating his importance within the history of violin (and viola!) pedagogy. It also includes instructions for practicing the variations with thorough explanation of the idiosyncrasies of these exercises. This is a valuable tool for violists with regard to isolating bowing techniques in a concentrated way.
