Very few excerpts demand such technical prowess as does Strauss' Don Juan, and thus it becomes a perfect vehicle for showing just what you can do. Since it appears on practically every audition list, it is simply expected that every successful candidate will have mastered its challenges - much like a "compulsory routine" in a gymnastics competition. The player must project the dramatic style of this work (including power, energy, straightforwardness, etc.) while remaining in control and focused on the nuts and bolts. Aim to "dot the i's and cross the t's" and portray both ability and stability - in your practice sessions approach the tasks with intent and confidence. -Melissa Matson
